A little bit of history
Since its inception in 2019, Suffolk Shorts has evolved from a bespoke curation of short films at the First Light Festival to a beloved local event celebrating independent cinema. What started as a 24-hour rolling series of programmes quickly revealed a hidden demand for short films among local audiences unfamiliar with the genre.
The transition to a competition-based festival in 2020 was a pivotal move. Then COVID happened. Despite the challenges, Suffolk Shorts attracted 300 submissions across five categories, showcasing diverse voices from both local and international filmmakers.
Strategic collaborations were essential, with events like the free awards evening at Ipswich Cinema helping to build a loyal audience base.
A key factor in the festival's success has been its partnership, since 2022, with The Riverside Theatre in Woodbridge. The venue's historic charm and accessible location create a welcoming atmosphere, making it a perfect home for the festival. The involvement of local judges and a focus on regional storytelling further strengthened ties with the community.
Being adaptable has been crucial to engage different demographics as well as our loyal locals. Collaborations with the University of Suffolk and Suffolk New College aim to attract younger audiences, while screenings at the INK Festival have helped reach older, rural communities.
The festival's new website and increased sponsorship efforts highlight a promising future for Suffolk Shorts. If you are reading this - it’s live!
